Boy did I have a lesson about this last week. Let me just tell you.

It was Friday afternoon, I was finishing up with my final client of the day. I walked back to load the computer, and it was completely black. “No worries,” I thought to myself. After a few minutes of fiddling with the power button, clicking the mouse, and firmly stamping the space bar with my index finger several times, I realized this was going to be a problem.

I phoned Apple Inc., and discovered our computer would need to go in for repair.

Fortunately, this was on a weekend. I sat back and thought to myself, “I can either be extremely frustrated that this happened to me and take it personally, or I can figure out a way to make this bad situation actually benefit me.” Then, it occurred to me. For a long time, I had considered setting myself up to be portable, so that I could make house calls or do events with my scanner. The answer was right there!

I immediately went to work making lemonade.

In the end, everything worked out. My computer now has a new logic board paid for by Apple (which was a miracle in and of itself). I have a new portable set up, and we also discovered a new and better system for backing up our files in case something like this happens again - now, that’s what I call adding the umbrella on top of your lemonade!
