A month to be thankful

Positive Quote of the week:

"I seldom end up where I want to go, but I always end up where I need to be."
- Douglas Adams

One of the challenges for this month from our weekly email was to write down a situation that did not go how you expected, then write why you were grateful it turned out differently.

So here it goes -

I want to tell you about how getting Alexander, our dog, wasn’t my idea, but if it weren’t for my dog, I may not have gone to chiropractic school.

I’ll be honest, I am not always grateful for my dog. He was given to us (for free) when we were first engaged. It was Erin’s idea to accept him. He’s not really “my kind of dog”. In fact, he’s Erin’s kind of dog because the Weimaraner is Erin’s dream dog! I like cattle dogs - Tough, loyal, scrappy… just what a dog should be. Alexander as a puppy was extremely cute, but he was needy, whiny, and high-maintenance.

I have learned to love him despite all this, and as I consider why I’m grateful for him, I am reminded of some pretty incredible situations that changed in my life because of him.

If it weren’t for him, I may not have gone to chiropractic school.

It’s true. I was testing for an HSF (health fitness specialist) exam back in the spring of 2012. This was a long test, and passing it would mean a new certification, which would secure a great job opportunity I was interested in. We had just gotten Alexander, and I was stuck with him for the day. He was going to have to stay in the car while I took the long exam.

He was restless and whining, the weather outside was hot, and the entire time I took the exam I was so distracted I couldn’t think. Was he tearing up my car? Was he whining and barking? Was he overheating? “This stupid dog is going to ruin my chances for this job!” I thought to myself. And he did. I missed passing by a few points, and I didn’t have the certification at the time of the interview, so I didn’t land the job.

So what happened?

This missed opportunity caused me to reflect on whether or not this job was really that important to me. Did I want something that would get me by for the time being? Or was I going to take a leap into an unknown area and pursue chiropractic college. Of course, you know what happened. The latter of the two options was certainly more risky, and I doubt I would have been so inclined to consider it if it had not been for my dog screwing up the chances for the other option. Thank you Alexander. You’re my kind of dog.

Folks! I am back from Boca Raton, and I want to give you an update on some new things happening in the office!
